5 Leading Large FOV CBCT Machines

Written by Dustin Haney | October 19, 2023

Last time, we reviewed 5 of the leading medium field of view (FOV) CBCT systems that deliver a great value for your dental practice. For this article, check out: 5 Leading Medium FOV CBCT Machines.

This week, we're reviewing the top large FOV dental cone beam machines available today. This article is aimed at doctors who need to be able to view anatomy beyond the dentition, most commonly used for:

  • Evaluating trauma cases
  • TMJ disorders
  • Airway & sleep apnea studies
  • Ectopic/impacted teeth & third molars
  • Orthognathic surgery
  • Assessing skeletal symmetry

While the above procedures require acquisition of broader regions of the skull, many large field-of-view CBCTs are still perfect for multi-specialty practices that offer a wide range of treatment options, from endodontics to orthognathic surgery, due to the system’s ability to collimate down to more localized anatomy.

For full disclosure, we are a dental technology dealer and we are obsessed with quality, so we do a lot of listening to make sure the products we offer provide a best-in-class experience. We have pretty high standards with regard to which brands we choose to work with and we’re consistently evaluating these based on what our customers are saying.

With this in mind, let’s dive into these leading large FOV CBCT models, and what makes them stand out among the competition.

Vatech Green X (Max FOV 18x15 cm)

Korean manufacturer Vatech is picking up steam in the US for its imaging technology. They manufacture several models of medium and large FOV CBCT, as well as 2D pan/ceph, handheld X-ray units, and intraoral sensors..

The Vatech Green X is the 3rd generation of the Vatech Green lineup. Like the previous generation, the Vatech Green CT 2, the Vatech Green X offers a range of selectable fields of view. The selection includes the following FOV sizes: 18x15, 16x11, 12x9, 8x8, 8x5, 5x5 and 4x4.

The Vatech Green X is an evolution of the Vatech Green family of CBCT models, also providing the 4-in-1 imaging capabilities of the Vatech Green CT 2. This 4-in-1 system combines 2D pano, optional ceph, 3D CBCT and 3D digital model scans for excellent image quality with less radiation.

This model also provides a high resolution 0.5MM voxel size, which is ideal for endodontics. With its 4cm x 4cm volume mode and 50 micron voxel size, the Endo mode will optimize treatment of highly-focused regions of interest.

We also believe when you’re shopping for CBCT, buyers should include  each brand’s 3D imaging software as part of your research. Most manufacturers develop their own proprietary 3D imaging software and offer their latest versions when you buy new equipment. You actually spend much more time optimizing images and planning treatment with the software than you will ever spend with the machine itself, so great software is key.

Ez3D-i 3D imaging software from Vatech is available on all Vatech CBCT models, including the Vatech Smart Plus. This software includes robust dental CBCT management tools such as image analysis and planning functions. Plus, the software makes it easy to capture, store, and share cone beam images with labs, referrals, patients and more.

i-CAT FLX V17 (Max FOV 23x17 cm) & DEXIS OP3D LX (MAX FOV 20x15 CM)

Many dental X-ray and CBCT models are available through DEXIS today, each bringing engineering excellence and technologies developed by legacy manufacturers, including: i-CAT (brand name still used today), Gendex, Instrumentarium, KaVo/KaVo Kerr, and Carestream Dental (for intraoral scanning technology).

These brands and manufacturers under today’s DEXIS umbrella bring a long history of excellence in the dental industry. For well over a century, DEXIS brands have put dental excellence at the center of what they do by manufacturing high-quality, innovative products while increasing the standards within the dental market.

The i-CAT brand has long been an industry leader in the development and manufacturing of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) dental radiography products. i-CAT cone beam systems and treatment-planning software continue to revolutionize 3D radiography (imaging). To put it simply, when you buy an i-CAT, you can rest assured that you're getting quality and innovation.

Their latest generation of CBCT systems, the i-CAT FLX V-Series, is now available through DEXIS and reputable dealers. Developed as an evolution of the award-winning i-CAT Next-Generation, The i-CAT FLX continues to offer cutting-edge image quality while delivering new innovative advancements in radiation dose.

The i-CAT FLX V17 offers flexible imaging control while minimizing radiation dose with customizable 3D cone beam protocols and a dedicated 2D panoramic scan. An extended FOV (23 x 17 cm) provides full cranial height 3D imaging for cephalometric, orthognathic and airway applications.

The DEXIS OP 3D LX is the next generation of DEXIS cone beam technology. For more than 60 years, the name ORTHOPANTOMOGRAPH system has stood for ultimate reliability and clinically correct maxillofacial imaging. The OP 3D LX system respects the legacy, yet renews the meaning of image quality, efficiency and ease-of-use.

This 2D/3D imaging platform expands your diagnostic capabilities with a wide range of clinical applications that support your evolving practice and enhance diagnostic confidence. This next generation system offers flexible field of view (FOV) options ranging from 5x5 cm up to 15x20 cm (optional) – which is the largest view option available on a DEXIS OP 3D platform to date.

With shorter scan times, the OP 3D LX captures the maxillofacial complex and large diagnostic areas in one non-stitched scan for fast workflows.

CARESTREAM CS 9600 (Max FOV 16x17 cm)

Carestream Dental is also one of today’s top dental imaging brands, introducing their 1st CBCT system almost 15 years ago. This manufacturer has a long-running history of innovation and imaging excellence. Like Vatech, they offer 2D and 3D imaging systems, handheld X-ray units, and intraoral sensors for a full range of clinical diagnostic imaging tools.

The Carestream CS 9600 3D offers up to 14 fields of view, ranging from 4x4cm to 16x17cm, with large FOV sizes to support nearly any clinical application.

Beyond offering a low dose mode and very high-resolution full-mouth 3D images (up to 75 microns), this model features the increasingly popular FaceScan feature. The innovative FaceScan feature generates realistic 3D facial images and automatically superimposes surface scans on CBCT images and 3D models, creating a virtual patient for detailed treatment planning.

Now… let’s talk about software. Many doctors choose Carestream because of its open source eco-system. Their CS Imaging software is designed to integrate all of the images from their entire line of products  into a single platform. This is a huge benefit for anyone utilizing other Carestream solutions, from CBCT to digital intraoral sensors.

Their 3D imaging software, CS 3D Imaging, includes implant, orthodontic, restorative and airway analysis modules to help you improve both workflow and the overall patient experience.

RAYSCAN PREMIERE & S (Max FOV 20x20 cm)

Ray is the Korean-based manufacturer of the Rayscan CBCT family of products. This company has nearly 20 years of experience in digital dentistry, and their Rayscan brand is renowned for their high-resolution imaging capabilities.

The Rayscan Studio 3D is a large FOV CBCT system, featuring Rayscan’s proprietary Free FOV feature. This gives you greater flexibility when selecting FOV. With Free FOV, a light-guided system indicates the location of the area to be scanned and can be adjusted according to the planned treatment, optimizing the exam to the needed anatomy while minimizing exposure and reducing the need for retakes or scout scans

The Rayscan Studio 3D is a game changer in the industry when it comes to innovation. As previously mentioned, the Rayscan Studio 3D is a true 5-in-1 CBCT system, allowing 3D cone beam, pan and ceph in a single scan (no ceph attachment required). Additionally, this system includes 3D Face and CT impression (intraoral data) capabilities.

With the Rayscan Studio 3D CBCT, there is no need to have an intraoral scanner, a face scanner, or a CT separately. You can avoid workflow complications which may  occur when combining scan data acquired from different systems via software. By superimposing all 3D scan data in one system, you can create a 3D Virtual Patient - layering digital impression, 3D CT scan and face scan.

PREXION EXPLORER EX & PRO (Max FOV 20x15 cm)

PreXion has over 15 years of experience developing CBCT systems, perfecting their products to be one of the most high-quality, dependable, and user-friendly systems in the market.

PreXion currently offers two editions of their Explorer model, the Explorer PRO and Explorer EX. The main difference between these two models is the optional cephalometric imaging module. The PreXion Explorer PRO is the world’s first 3D CBCT with an integrated ceph X-ray, making it an ideal fit for orthodontic practices that may not have space for a traditional arm-mounted cephalometric unit.

Both Explorer CBCT models provide an accurate 360˚ panoramic perspective from 523 to 1,024 projected views. PreXion Explorer models offer up to a large field of view with  sizes of 5x5cm, 10x10cm, 15x10cm, and 15x16cm.

With every CBCT purchase from PreXion, your install will come complete with the latest version of PreXion 3D Viewer imaging software. This solution has many features which help differentiate their systems from the competition, including:

- Multi-Data Feature: Load multiple patient scans on a single screen. Synchronize pre- and post-operative scans and detect differences, slice-by-slice.
- Thin Client Server: PreXion3D CBCT scanners do not require computer hardware upgrades. It does not slow down network bandwidth like other CBCT scanners.
- Save Scenes: Save your case workup as a scene or create multiple saved scenes with a single scan.

So, Which CBCT Is Right For You?

If you’re offering services which require large FOV CBCT (or inviting a traveling specialist into your practice regularly), any of these options may be a good fit for you.

If your practice requires a smaller view capturing images beyond the dentition, you may want to consider a small-to-mid FOV CBCT - depending on your procedure mix. Not sure what your needs are? Get started by checking out our article: Dental Cone Beam Field of View (FOV) Selection Guide.
