An Overview of DEXIS Dental X-Ray Machines

Written by Dustin Haney | January 23, 2024

Many dental X-ray and CBCT models are available through DEXIS today, each bringing engineering excellence and technologies developed by legacy manufacturers, including: i-CAT (brand name still used today), Gendex, Instrumentarium, KaVo/KaVo Kerr, NOMAD (handheld X-ray units) and Carestream Dental (for intraoral scanning technology).

These brands and manufacturers under today’s DEXIS/Envista umbrella bring a long history of excellence in the dental industry. For over 70 years, DEXIS brands have put dental excellence at the center of what they do by manufacturing high-quality, innovative products while increasing the standards within the dental market.

If you’re in the market for a new 3D dental X-ray machine, DEXIS should be on your shortlist.. Because like a few of the other popular imaging brands, DEXIS is able to offer doctors a wide range of innovative and advanced imaging systems.

If you’re evaluating DEXIS for your next CBCT purchase, here's everything you may want to know to help you compare, even against other manufacturers. Today, we’ll review:

DEXIS 3D CBCT Systems

When shopping for a dental cone beam system, you need an idea of the maximum field of view (FOV) size that you’ll need for your practice and patients.

CBCT systems are typically categorized by three FOV groups: small, medium, and large. And, keep in mind, with DEXIS CBCT systems, your medium and large FOV cone beam dental systems can collimate down to achieve smaller FOV sizes, when needed.

Here’s a brief overview of how each FOV size is used so you can match your needs with the best Vatech model to narrow your options.

  • Small FOV CBCT typically captures a 5 x 5 cm scan to capture fine details. A small FOV dental cone beam system is the right choice for you if you only need to view one or two teeth at a time and is best suited for endodontics and single implant treatments.
  • Medium FOV CBCT typically captures an 8 x 8 cm scan or similar for single or dual arch applications, and is the most common CBCT size based on its versatility. These systems are often the best choice for most general dentists, are ideal for surgical guides, viewing impacted teeth, and other applications requiring one or more full dental arches.
  • Large FOV starts around 13-15 cm and can go as large as 17-23 cm. Large FOV cone beam systems are necessary for evaluating trauma cases, TMJ disorders, airway and sleep apnea studies, ectopic and impacted teeth and third molars, orthognathic surgery, and assessing skeletal symmetry. Doctors in oral surgery, orthodontics, and sleep medicine will find this size to be the most helpful.

And.. Let’s Talk About Software

When it comes to CBCT, most manufacturers need to develop their own 3D imaging software for handling image visualization, optimization and treatment planning. 3D imaging softwares can vary greatly, especially when it comes to intuitive functionality and ease of use. Ultimately, it’s definitely something you should take into consideration when shopping around for a CBCT system.

You want to feel confident you and your staff will receive proper training and be able to navigate the equipment in order to maximize on your benefits of CBCT. Fortunately, DEXIS imaging softwares are award-winning and highly regarded in the dental industry.

With the DEXIS (formerly KaVo) OP 3D systems, CBCT units are sold with the latest version of DTX Studio Clinic for managing 2D & 3D imagings, intraoral scans and photography into one award-winning platform powered by assisted intelligence. AI helps do the work so you can focus on delivering better patient care.

Anatomage has provided turnkey solutions to the dental community, in particular with its Tx STUDIO software, the "brains" of an i-CAT CBCT.

Tx STUDIO powered by Anatomage, is an integral part of the fast i-CAT workflow and provides the power of multiple software systems combined into one simple-to-use solution. Tx Studio is well known for its powerful 3D workflow, integration with additional 3rd party planning programs, CAD/CAM integration capabilities, and more.

Features include airway studies, exportable STL files, surgical guide fabrication, and much more. The software’s open architecture allows for complete flexibility, plus you can easily share and send high-quality images to colleagues, patients and others with the software’s easy export functions.

Now, with a better understanding of 3D imaging with DEXIS, let’s help you find the right DEXIS CBCT system for your needs by understanding each available model:

DEXIS OP 3D

For more than 60 years, the name ORTHOPANTOMOGRAPH (OP) system has stood for ultimate reliability and clinically correct maxillofacial imaging. The DEXIS (formerly KaVo) OP 3D systems respects the legacy, yet renews the meaning of image quality, efficiency and ease-of-use.

The DEXIS OP 3D is a unit designed for advanced dental imaging needs. It is a complete X-ray platform that provides easy-to-use features throughout the entire dental imaging workflow.

The DEXIS OP 3D offers a CBCT field of view from 5x5 cm up to 9x11 cm with an optional upgrade to 9x14 cm, covering a range of applications from endodontics to TMJ analysis. Designed to expand its capabilities as you practice grows, the DEXIS OP 3D offers an optional cephalometric attachment upgrade.

DEXIS OP 3D LX

The DEXIS OP 3D LX is the next generation of DEXIS cone beam technology. This 2D/3D imaging platform expands your diagnostic capabilities with a wide range of clinical applications that support your evolving practice and enhance diagnostic confidence.

This next generation system offers flexible field of view (FOV) options ranging from 5x5 cm up to 15x20 cm (optional) – which is the largest view option available on a DEXIS OP 3D platform to date.

With shorter scan times, the OP 3D LX captures the maxillofacial complex and large diagnostic areas in one non-stitched scan for fast workflows.

i-CAT FLX V17

The i-CAT brand has long been an industry leader in the development and manufacturing of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) dental radiography products. i-CAT cone beam systems and treatment-planning software continue to revolutionize 3D radiography (imaging). To put it simply, when you buy an i-CAT, you can rest assured that you're getting quality and innovation.

Their latest generation of CBCT systems, the i-CAT FLX V-Series, is now available through DEXIS and reputable dealers. Developed as an evolution of the award-winning i-CAT Next-Generation, The i-CAT FLX continues to offer cutting-edge image quality while delivering new innovative advancements in radiation dose.

The i-CAT FLX V17 offers flexible imaging control while minimizing radiation dose with customizable 3D cone beam protocols and a dedicated 2D panoramic scan. An extended FOV (23 x 17 cm) provides full cranial height 3D imaging for cephalometric, orthognathic and airway applications.
