Ray, the company behind the popular Rayscan CBCT family of products, is a Korean-based manufacturer with nearly 20 years of experience in digital dentistry, initially part of the Samsung Electronics family of brands. If you’re looking to upgrade to 3D imaging, or even upgrade your current 3D imaging system, it’s very likely that Rayscan will be recommended by colleagues, shown in dental conferences and CE courses, and by imaging experts and dealers.

What makes Rayscan a choice brand when it comes to CBCT? Today, we’re diving into the features and functions of Rayscan’s current lineup of cone beam models. We’ll share everything dentists and specialists may want to know to help compare, even against other manufacturers. This information should help you narrow down to find the right machine for your current and future needs.

We’ll review:

- Rayscan Studio 3D CBCT

- Rayscan Alpha 3D CBCT

- Rayscan Alpha Plus 3D CBCT

Why Rayscan?

Before we dive into each of their current models, let’s review some of the reasons doctors are choosing Rayscan when selecting their 3D imaging, or even when upgrading from 2D. Below are the core value propositions that you’ll find on any current model.

Unrivaled Imaging Quality

Rayscan's CBCT systems are renowned for their high-resolution imaging capabilities. All Rayscan CBCT models capture images in fine detail, enabling doctors to make precise diagnoses and prepare optimal treatment plans.

3-in-1 Imaging Capabilities

All Rayscan CBCT systems feature at least 3 imaging capture modes, including 3D CBCT, 2D panoramic and optional 2D cephalometric.

The Rayscan 3D Alpha and Alpha Plus can be used 3-in-1 digital x-ray or a 4-in-1 combination with their RAYDENT Solution for in-clinic production of dental appliances such as a temporary crown/bridge, implant surgical guide, ENDO guide, tooth aligner, and more.

The Rayscan Studio 3D goes a step further by offering a 3D Face Scan feature, making it a 5-in-1 system. By superimposing all 3D scan data, treatment planning is made easier with a true to life facial scan. We’ll discuss these features in greater depth in our review of the Rayscan Studio 3D CBCT.

Fast Scanning Times

All Rayscan CBCT models have one of the industry’s leading scan times, without loss of definition. Rayscan CBCT can scan at a minimum of 4.9 to maximum 16 seconds, while maintaining high-resolution CT images.

Free FOV (Field of View)

Rayscan’s unique free FOV feature helps minimize the patient’s radiation exposure rate by scanning only the necessary area for diagnosis.

This feature allows you to see where you focus with a light-guided, free FOV. The visible x-ray guide indicates the location of the area to be scanned and can conveniently be adjusted according to the purpose of the treatment.

Note: this feature is not available on the Rayscan Alpha. Rather, the Rayscan Alpha features multiple FOV options - comparable to other brands.

Now, Let’s Compare Rayscan CBCT Models

Now, let’s talk about the differences in each RAYSCAN model.

Rayscan Alpha 3D CBCT Models

Rayscan currently offers two editions of their Alpha model, the Alpha and Alpha Plus. The main difference between these two models is their FOV (field of view). As previously mentioned, both devices are built-in 3-in-1 machines with 3D cone beam, pan and ceph attachment. Both additionally have the option for 4-in-1 with 3D CT impression capabilities with RAYDENT.

The Rayscan Alpha 3D is a mid-to-large FOV CBCT system, with up to 10x10cm scans and multi-FOV selection. This 3D scan is used for single or dual arch applications, and is the most common CBCT size based on its versatility. These systems are often the best choice for most general dentists, are ideal for surgical guides, viewing impacted teeth, and other applications requiring one or more full dental arches.

The Rayscan Alpha Plus 3D features Rayscan’s proprietary Free FOV feature, meaning a light-guided FOV on the system indicates the location of the area to be scanned and can be adjusted according to the purpose of the treatment. This FOV ranges up to 16x10cm, making it a larger FOV, used for the same purposes as the medium FOV, and also some additional ortho, sleep and airway studies.

Rayscan Studio 3D CBCT

The Rayscan Studio 3D is a large FOV CBCT system, featuring the same Free FOV feature as the Alpha Plus 3D, with scans ranging up to 20x20cm.

Large FOV CBCT scans are necessary for evaluating trauma cases, TMJ disorders, airway and sleep apnea studies, ectopic and impacted teeth and third molars, orthognathic surgery, and assessing skeletal symmetry. Doctors in oral surgery, orthodontics, and sleep medicine will find this size to be the most helpful.

The Rayscan Studio 3D is a game changer in the industry when it comes to innovation. As previously mentioned, the Rayscan Studio 3D is a true 5-in-1 CBCT system, allowing 3D cone beam, pan and ceph in a single scan (no ceph attachment required). Additionally, this system scans for 3D Face and CT impressions (intraoral data).

With the Rayscan Studio 3D CBCT, there is no need to have an intraoral scanner, a face scanner, or a CT separately. You can avoid complications which would occur when combining scan data acquired from different systems. By superimposing all 3D scan data in one system, you can create a 3D Virtual Patient (see below).

Finally, one additional reason doctors choose the Rayscan Studio 3D for their 3D imaging system is their digital treatment planning and dental appliances workflow. The Studio 3D streamlines the data scanned from the CBCT so it can be transferred to a compatible 3D printer for rapid production of dental appliances in your clinic (saving time and money).

Plus, the Studio 3D features a unique digital tray feature to assist with digital impressioning. This tool is specially designed for accurate digitalization of patient dentition information. Its radiopaque material and structure are easily distinguishable in x-ray CT. Not only does it capture the negative imprint of hard teeth/soft tissues but also provides positioning information in the patient's mouth.
